About
Almost all of staysie atoms’ songs are about her dog, Benji. “He’s so funny,” she says in a Rising interview with Pitchfork. “Most of my songs are written by staring at him.”
The 22-year-old Oakhaven native was raised on blues, r&b, and rock ‘n roll. She credits her vocal training and “origin story” to attending Stax Music School, but reflects on how she wanted to make pop-punk music instead. “We had to learn Tina Turner and Little Richard, but I wanted to sing pop-punk.”
staysie dropped “BENJI CAME IN WIT A GLOCK FREESTYLE UNCIRCUMCISED” on SoundCloud at the top of the pandemic. The track sports woozy r&b production with PinkPantheress-type beats and atoms’ own take on bedroom mumble rap. Her y2k cybertrap discography has only grown since then, with drops like “POP A BITCH LIKE A COLLAR” and “SHEESH” that are saturated with tasteful lyrical aggression that she credits to her Memphis roots.
staysie has seen editoral support from Pitchfork, Halfmoon BK + more, and playlisting placements from Spotify’s webcore.
